bp is killing me, energy, and rand paul, libertarian
heya,
so, it's been a little while. i do have a couple of thoughts for now.
1) bp - this is an absolute disaster. the only positive that i pray can come out of this is that we as a country will begin to change our energy policy..jpg)
Tom Friedman constantly talks about it. Robert Redford was on Olberman the other day and he was talking about it. How do we change the culture of this country!?!?! Redford was saying we had a chance to change energy policy 30 years ago - pre-Reagan, like the economy, and this country decided to put it off. How disappointing we look back on that time and that generation. I wasn't there, but I want to know the reason these decisions were made. What if this country reacted the same way in WWII?
Today's article in the NY Times reports oil is tied to Lousiana, and the statefolk isn't calling for a drastic change in policy. Yet, the article also states, Louisiana is one of the poorer states in the union.
2) there's Rand Paul. This is another disaster turned opportunity. Days after getting eaten alive on TRMS for saying he would have liked to modify 1964 CRA, particularly the part about private business and government intervention (think Woolworth lunchcounters), he calls out the Obama administration for getting angry at BP about this mess. Well I never. If you're thinking Tea Party to the rescue - you now know the house has burned down. i guess you're next step is militia in idaho.
We've got some nuggets here. This is all politics, but business is coming.
Peace

Generational Media, yes
Companeros,
So, the Kaiser Family Foundation study on youth media consumption - i thought was interesting, and got me thinking, with some help from Stephen Pinker. I'm reading his book, The Language Instinct, a
nd the argument early on is that 1) acquiring native language is instinctive, and 2) that children apply their own lense/filter - and arguably improvement to the language. Maybe that's not so transformational, as cultures evolve, we obviously operate differently today than during the 19th century say when Alexis de Tocueqville was observing the US.
But I thought it interesting in relation to media usage - and tracking back to this study - where American youth 8-18 are literally spending what the NY Times called every waking moment with media. Yes, technologically, (and including OOH and the sign painted on the delivery truck), media surrounds us. What's interesting to me is youth entire adaptation of mobile media technology.
This is the transition - the lense/filter - improvement that Pinker argues. Youth have TV at their disposable (that's the current/old language). It's their use of mobile and alternate 'hard' media to consume the current/old language is the improvement.
The point here to me is simply generational media. Do kids watch TV more than ever? Yes, undeniably, but they're also spending spending over an hour a day on their mobile on activities outside of just talking and texting. Hell even it was just talking and texting that's about 2 hours itself, but the mobile today is more music, TV, entertainment, gaming, some information/news in their lives, when they're so inclined.
What does this mean? It means for advertising that TV is the next radio, or the next newspaper or the next OOH. I think digital/mobile is where brands now need to lead with their position - and that could be the most interesting piece. Because the position is in a sense 'compromised' or diluted, or affected, or whatever term you'd like to use. the brand is no longer stand alone, rather the brand is a member of the group. That's the interplay.
the brand as a member of the group.
the opportunity will be to brand via relationship (remember brand as member of the group). make it relationship branding. as they say in improv - start from the middle - it's much more interesting - and thus you'll have your engagement.
I think i just hit it - relationship branding.
My God. It's full of stars.

el nino
new yoke, oct. 8, 2009. evening.
the photo at left is by my house. it's not taken today though.
new york is an interesting city. I've heard it's a city that creates is own weather pattern. i can believe that, because of the buildings up and the city below.
it's a monster, but I love it, and so do so many others. it's the nation's capital, and the pinnacle of business - mythical in some cases, real in others.
then there's the east cost. I really like the east coast. It's a happening part of this country. Active, energy. an entire seaboard, with some decent history, American History, my freinds.
One of the books i'm reading now is American Lion about Andrew Jackson, 'old hickory.' you know, i'm a history major in addition to the broadcast over there at the Newhouse, where i visited not too long ago.
I checked out this year's squad against another methodist school as the past great coach Coach Mac said in a radio podcast prior to the game. I can deal with that. I'm a Syracuse man and damn proud. The boys pulled one out against that Big Ten team.
That was a nice day. picturesque late summer.
alright.
